/ Director’s Update – January 2021

Director’s Update – January 2021

Happy New Year to our Cybersecurity and Information Systems Information Analysis Center (CSIAC) users and contributors!

Despite the many pandemic impacts on products, services, and operational strategy, CSIAC had an exciting year in 2020!  Thanks in part to our renewed presence on social media, we witnessed our number of subscribers rise to an all-time high of more than 19,000.  While the COVID-19 pandemic halted personal and business travel around the globe, CSIAC successfully orchestrated several virtual events including two large workshops consisting of multiple sessions concentrating on Smart Bases/Smart Cities’ technologies/solutions and Adversarial Machine Learning resources.  Over the course of the year, we provided a mix of informative podcasts and webinars balanced across our cybersecurity, modeling & simulation, software data & analysis, and knowledge management technical focus areas. Our informative multi-part podcast series on the Rust and C++ programming languages led to the soon to be released “Code Corner” podcast format – look for the initial rollout in early 2021, featuring three CSIAC Subject Matter experts (SMEs) discussing a comparative analysis of Rust and C++.

We concluded 2020 with a guest lecture for a popular international event – the Marshall Center’s International Program on Cyber Security Studies. https://www.marshallcenter.org/en

We have an equally exciting 2021 planned. Stay tuned!

Following is a summary of our recent and upcoming releases, all of which can be accessed via our website at www.csiac.org

BECOME A CSIAC SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT (SME):

CSIAC SMEs provide a wealth of expertise to the technical community through a variety of means. Our SMEs are often highlighted on our website and receive technical community recognition through publication and presentation of CSIAC products (state-of-the-art reports, journal articles, quick to community reports, webinars and podcasts). The U.S. government, academia, and industry users of our products and services can benefit from SME contributors like yourself. Our SMEs also have access to their fellow SMEs for collaboration and consultation on technical topics related to our four technical focus areas.  Joining the CSIAC SME team is a simple two-step process. To start, click: csiac.org/sme

Ask us about our flexible and quick-to-award Core Analysis Task (CAT) vehicle:

A CAT is a customer-funded project that is performed by CSIAC under a pre-competed indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract delivery order.  CATs utilize customer-tailored R&D efforts to solve specific technical problems across four technical focus areas.  https://www.csiac.org/services/core-analysis-task-cat-program/

These vehicles are intended to facilitate rapid-SME support to government customers with minimal pre-award processing and paperwork. For more information, visit our website: https://www.csiac.org/about/free-inquiries-and-core-analysis-task-cat-program/, or contact us directly at info@csiac.org.

CSIAC Report - Smart Cities, Smart Bases and Secure Cloud Architecture for Resiliency by Design

Integration of Smart City Technologies to create Smart Bases for DoD will require due diligence with respect to the security of the data produced by Internet of Things (IOT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT). This will increase more so with the rollout of 5G and increased automation "at the edge". Commercially, data will be moving to the cloud first, and then stored for process improvement analysis by end-users. As such, implementation of Secure Cloud Architectures is a must. This report provides some use cases and a description of a risk based approach to cloud data security. Clear understanding, adaptation, and implementation of a secure cloud framework will provide the military the means to make progress in becoming a smart military.
