In 2018 the amount of known cyber security vulnerabilities rose to approximately 16,500, beating 2017’s record of 14,714. With the increasing popularity of open source software hackers of ill intent are able to easily follow road maps of existing software as well as use prior information to gain a head start in breaking through the defenses of new software.
These vulnerabilities not only have the potential to effect an individual, but a company as a whole. With the EU passing laws concerning ssecuring private data on-line a company can be subject to hefty fines if deemed incompetent in safeguarding customer or user data.
The most effective way to combat this trend may be for companies security teams to pay due diligence when testing software for any known, or potential vulnerabilities before having their software go live.
