Enhance cybersecurity awareness and survivability for DoD, industry partners, and academia in the face of the ever-increasing threat of cyber attacks. Cybersecurity (CS) includes managing risks related to the use, processing, storage, and transmission of information and the systems and processes used for those purposes, including analog and physical form. CS includes information availability, identification and authentication, confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation as well as the economic considerations with respect to selection of CS techniques, CS processes, and industry trends.
46,000 veterans impacted by VA data breach
On Monday, The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) stated that around 46,000 of veterans’ personal information was accessed in a recent data breach. This information was uncovered when the agency’s Financial Services Center found that an unauthorized user was accessing an application that is used to help veterans pay for medical and also diverted funds that were meant for community health providers. According to the VA, the people involved with the data breach used social engineering tactics to access accounts and exploited authentication protocols. The agency then began sending letters to the veterans impacted by the breach and offered them free credit monitoring to those whose Social Security numbers were compromised. The VA has not released any details regarding the data breach.
