29-year old Aleksei Yurievich Burkov from Russia was charged with running a $20 million stolen card trading ring. The trading ring, Cardplanet, was a website running from 2009 through 2013 that people could buy credit card data from. After someone would buy the stolen card details, they were then able to put all the data onto the magnetic stripe of a blank card, cloning the card and using it to make purchases. Cardplanet sold data from more than 150,000 compromised cards, with fraudulent purchases made totaling $20 million. Burkov was charged with access device fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, computer intrusions, identity theft, and money laundering. He will face a maximum of 80 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
