In Westchester County, Yorktown and Croton School Districts have recently had their computer systems hacked by a cyber security attack created by someone who was looking for a payment in order to remove the ransomware that has froze both of the computer systems. Yorktown schools then had to make a temporary shift from hybrid learning to fully remote/distance learning after sharing the news of the district’s cyber attack. The ransomware attack encrypted data on Yorktown’s networks which forced officials to restore servers from backups and go to each room to reimage devices. Croton-Harmon School District had gone through a similar conflict, and in a message to students and parents it explained that it was a ransomware attack in which this type of data breach keeps an organization from accessing its data until they pay a ransom to get the data back. Both school districts announced that there was no evidence that any personal data was compromised, only the laptops and computer workstations were affected. Overall, ransomware attacks have become an increasingly popular breach in school districts.
