The organization known as the Securities Industry and Financial Market Association (SITMA) ran a coordinated simulation (the banks participated) of a ransomware attack direct toward the global banking sector. The big banks have recognized that this may be the biggest risk in the banking sector. The full report hasn’t been released yet, but one of the main take away’s was that there may be a need for alternative payment methods in order to avoid having a full system shut down.
