France is in the middle of creating a nationwide program that uses facial recognition. They are using this to create digital identification of all their citizens. The program is called Alicem and it was developed by the Ministry of the Interior and the National Security Title Agency. They wanted to launch the app by Christmas but it’s actually coming much faster than they have suspected. It is planned to be released next month (November 2019). The CNIL (The country’s privacy regulator) is not fond of the program. They claim that the program breaches the EU’s law of consent. There is a lot of controversy on what France is doing and it is starting to create more and more conflict by the day.
