The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently tested 10 destroyed smartphones that were loaded with data. Engineers and forensic professionals attempted to extract the data from internal chips and compare it to the original data. Many criminals try to destroy evidence on their smartphone, so the NIST wanted to find out if data could still be obtained.
