A community college in St. Louis that contains more than 50,000 students, declared there was a successful phishing attacking taking place on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. More than 5,000 of the college’s students and employees had their personal information leaked. The personal information that were leaked were their names, student ID numbers, birth dates, home addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Out of those individuals who were affected by this phishing attack, 71 of their Social Security numbers were also compromised. It is important to know what emails are real and what emails are fake. This disaster at the St. Louis Community College could have been avoided if the students were more aware of the phishing emails. A phishing email was sent, and approximately 20 students and employees fell for it. It will benefit the students and the college with their upcoming training for those 20 students as well as all of the staff to better understand how to identify phishing emails. This type of attack is very common, especially among the k-12 and higher education institutions.
