SmarterASP.NET, a web hosting provider with almost a half of a million customers, was hit with a ransomware attack that took down its customers’ websites. While there is not an official statement about when the attack took place, a string of Tweets from angry customers that were not notified of the attack could indicate incompetence on the provider’s side or an attempt to deal with the problem before it was noticed. Currently 90% of the accounts are back online with the others 10% expected to be recovered in the next 24 hours. According to a ZDNet report, customer files were encrypted by a version of the Snatch ransomware, which is known for being distributed via spam email containing infected attachments or by exploiting vulnerabilities in the operating system and installed software. Ransomware attacks seem to be focused on service providers for either a lucrative payout or for gaining critical client data.
