As early as 2010, Russian operatives hacked into the FBI’s system in order to monitor and impede the bureau’s surveillance of Russian spies based in the United States. It came to light in an investigation published Monday. This is a big deal because these breaches in security at one of the highest levels within the federal government allowed Russians to evade surveillance, collect information about their pursuers, and even locating undercover FBI surveillance teams and FBI communications/orders.
This investigation also gives further insight as to why under the Obama administration, nearly 3 dozen Russian diplomats were deported back to Russia in December 2016.
