I saw this story a couple of weeks ago. Microsoft put out an article responding to this kind of attack. It looks like a possible way to combat this is through secured-core PCs. Meaning that the computer would have to be built with security in mind. Microsoft has also stated that this was one of the reasons that they do not use Thunderbolt technology in their Surface Pros.
