Some local businesses shut down the following day as a precaution because they also used the data centers managed by one of the affected companies. The company network itself seems to be the thing that was encrypted, with other functions merely being disabled in response.

There have been attacks by this group in the past, but luckily this instance is just them showing interest in the method rather than an actual threat so far.
A few months ago the same IP address address used in the attack was associated with an attack on a German bakery. This led them to assume its being delivered through a new spam relay.
