I always turn WiFi off on my devices when I leave my house.
Crackers can collect a list of the WiFi networks that your device connected to previously (including your home network) when WiFi is turned on.
I think something else that can be done to protect information on public networks is a VPN service. It basically creates an encrypted tunnel that all data travels through.
